Unsane
The meanest-sounding band to ever call New York home. Spencer's voice sits on top of a bass tone that feels like it's trying to collapse the load-bearing walls. Album covers are infamous — actual crime-scene photography, no metaphor — and the music lives up to them. Charlie Ondras died in '92 and the band almost didn't continue. They did. Wrote Scattered, Smothered & Covered anyway. Every record since has been a clinic in writing riffs that feel like they're made out of rebar.
People
Unsane's frontman and the only member to make it through every lineup. Spencer's voice is a wet bark, his guitar tone is a loading dock fire, and his lyrics read like a police blotter. Survived a near-fatal assault in Belgium in 2007 that sidelined the band for years. Came back. Kept going. Still here.
