Chris Lombardi's NYC label that went from underground scrapper to indie institution. Early catalog: Teenage Fanclub, Railroad Jerk, Unsane. Later: Pavement, Yo La Tengo, Guided by Voices, Cat Power. Matador is one of the few 90s indies that actually made it out of the decade intact — still putting out records that matter, still independent on paper if not entirely in practice.
