Shellac

1992–present·Chicago, IL

Three guys, three instruments, zero fat. Albini's guitar sounds like a band saw cutting sheet metal, Weston's bass rumbles underneath like a freight train, and Trainer hits his tiny kit like he's got a personal grudge against each drum. No overdubs, no effects pedals, no bull. Every note is accountable and every show is a clinic in how to level a room with the absolute minimum required gear. If you need more than this, you're not listening hard enough.

People

Steve Albini
guitarvocalsproducerengineer

The man. Guitarist, engineer, professional thorn in the industry's side. Big Black, Rapeman, Shellac. Recorded Surfer Rosa, In Utero, and about a thousand underground records at Electrical Audio. Never took royalties because he thinks that's stealing. Loves poker and hates your favorite band's production. The most principled human in rock music.

Also in: Big Black, Rapeman
Bob Weston
bassengineer

Shellac's low end. Also an engineer at Electrical Audio. Did time in Volcano Suns and Codeine before settling into the trio that would rule his life. Quiet guy, huge sound.

Todd Trainer
drums

Shellac drummer. Rifle Sport and Brick Layer Cake before that. Plays the smallest kit you've ever seen and hits every single drum like it owes him money. Maximum precision, zero waste.
