Dischord Records and a thirty-block ethos. Ian MacKaye and Jeff Nelson built a DIY empire out of a Georgetown rowhouse — no contracts, five-dollar shows, straight edge, zero bullshit. Minor Threat opened the door, Rites of Spring redefined what hardcore could sound like when it slowed down and got vulnerable, Fugazi carried the torch for the next fifteen years. DC noise rock isn't noise rock exactly — it's post-hardcore with a moral code. The bands play louder, talk less, split doors 50/50, and treat the audience like adults. Every town with a DIY scene is modeled on this one whether they admit it or not.
