Slint

1986–1992·Louisville, KY

Four kids from Louisville basically invented an entire genre and then split before anyone figured out what happened. Spiderland is THE record. Whispered vocals, guitars that creep around in the dark for five minutes then EXPLODE, and the most unsettling cover photo in rock history. Brian Paulson recorded it. Touch and Go put it out. Nobody bought it. Then everybody bought it. By then the band was already gone.

People

Brian McMahan
guitarvocals

Slint's guitarist and the voice that whispers through Spiderland like something lurking under your bed. That spoken-word delivery launched a thousand post-rock bands and none of them figured out how to do it as well as he did.

David Pajo
guitar

Slint's other guitar. Then Tortoise, then Zwan (yes, that Zwan), then the solo stuff as Aerial M and Papa M. The guy can't stop joining and leaving bands. Louisville royalty.

Britt Walford
drums

Slint's drummer. Also played in The Breeders under the fake name 'Shannon Doughton' because why not. The rhythmic backbone of Spiderland. Evergreen too.

Matt Bonner
drums

Slint's original drummer before Britt Walford took over the kit. Part of that early Louisville teenage crew that also included McMahan and Pajo. Helped lay the groundwork before Spiderland changed everything.
