Polvo

1990–2002·Chapel Hill, NC

Bowie and Brylawski tuned their guitars to god knows what and created this incredible sound that's dissonant and angular and somehow CATCHY at the same time. How do you make math rock you can hum? Ask Polvo. Today's Active Lifestyles is the one that gets all the press but honestly every record rules. Chapel Hill's weirdest and best.

People

Ash Bowie
guitarvocals

Polvo's co-pilot alongside Brylawski, conjuring detuned, dissonant guitar lines that sound like they're from a parallel universe where tuning is optional. Chapel Hill's most adventurous guitarist in a town full of them.

Dave Brylawski
guitarvocals

The other half of Polvo's dual-guitar attack. He and Bowie created an interlocking style that sounded like two people having an argument in a language they invented. Weird tunings, weirder time signatures, total brilliance.

Steve Popson
bass

Polvo's bassist, somehow making sense of the chaos that Bowie and Brylawski were unleashing on either side of him. Held the center while the guitars went to war with conventional harmony. Essential and underrated.

Brian Walsby
drums

Polvo's drummer and a legendary punk scene cartoonist whose illustrations are as recognizable as his drumming. Played in a million bands and drew flyers for a million more. The rare guy whose art career is as impressive as his music career.
